Recording a New Album — Part 5: Tracking Basics

In addition to the video above, I wanted to add a few written words about the experience.
I mentioned in the video that things “couldn’t have gone better,” but that’s a rather large understatement. We had two days (12 hours each day) booked at the studio, and they went so efficiently that not only did we get all the bass and drums recorded, but also all the acoustic guitar, and we went home early both days.
Typically, the rule of thumb in recording is this: “It always takes longer than you think it will.” Most of the time, this is the case. However, our session shattered that stereotype. Chad and Robin were nailing it in two, maybe three takes max. A couple quick punches for options, and we were on to the next song. Right away we were getting good sounds, good feels, and good takes, and that makes everything so damn enjoyable. It makes you feel like it was meant to be — an unbeatable feeling and creative state.
I owe a very large thanks to Robin Everhart, Chad Wright, Chris Hobson, Chandler Harrod and the rest of the wonderful people at LAFX for an incredible tracking experience.
Next stop: guitars and vocals!
